About Us

Our organisation is dedicated educating the community and honouring the women who served and those who made the supreme sacrifice for our country. The South Australian Women’s Memorial Trust have been educating the wider community about the Bangka Strait Massacre for nearly 70 years. As a volunteer-run organisation, we are passionate about continuing this legacy and ensuring that the sacrifice of these brave women is not forgotten.

"Today, the importance of remembering this event is absolutely critical.
Because in remembering this event we are learning and thinking about who we are as Australians. Because through these 22 women part of that fabric of Australia has been grown.

Twenty-two threads of that national fabric are represented here. Twenty-two threads that tell us who we are, what we stand for, how we go about life and what our values are, are found in these women."

Bangka Day Memorial Service

10am - 16 February 2025

Each year, the South Australian Women’s Memorial Playing Fields Trust hosts a memorial service, dedicated to honouring the nurses who died in the Bangka Island Massacre. We honour the service and sacrifice they made almost 80 years ago.

This service is the largest memorial dedicated to servicewomen in the Southern Hemisphere.

The service includes a special guest speaker, followed by light refreshments. This service is open to the public and we welcome and encourage people of all ages to attend.
