We tell their story.
We remember their sacrifice.

The South Australian Women’s Memorial Playing Field Trust is dedicated educating the community about the Bangka Strait Massacre and to honour and remember the women who served and those who made the supreme sacrifice for our country from the Navy, Army and Air Force.

The Service

The
Remembered

On February 16th, 1942, on Bangka Island’s Radji Beach, 22 Australian Army Nurses were captured by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army.

They were motioned to wade into the sea. The soldiers opened fire.

All but one of these brave women were killed in the massacre.

Five years later, the lone survivor, Vivian Bullwinkel, gave evidence at a war crimes trial in Tokyo.

Bangka Day Memorial Service

10am - 16 February 2025

Each year, the South Australian Women’s Memorial Playing Fields Trust hosts a memorial service, dedicated to honouring the nurses who died in the Bangka Island Massacre. We honour the service and sacrifice they made almost 80 years ago.

This service is the largest memorial dedicated to servicewomen in the Southern Hemisphere.

The service includes a special guest speaker, followed by light refreshments. This service is open to the public and we welcome and encourage people of all ages to attend.
